Our $500m 'gift' to Hollywood

New Zealand taxpayers have spent more than half a billion dollars over the past decade subsidising Hollywood movies and TV series, a Herald investigation reveals.

The figure includes more than $220 million in rebates, paid from a fund for big-budget productions, as well as tax breaks claimed by movie companies.

Last year, the Government changed its mind about the tax breaks and passed a law to stop them.
There have been several famous movies filmed in New Zealand, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy,The Last Samurai, and the Xena series to name but a few.

Some people say we should welcome the producers, despite the costs. Others say No. If the big movie makers don't come, we can have the little chaps. Watch video. LOL
