Thanks To Our Brave Babies On The Front Lines Of Freedom

Its 31 May 2010, i'll rmb today. =D

I wanna fly, I wanna drive, I wanna go

It’s Monday! That means mix tape Monday over at Lacey in Love.

I get a lot of flack for this, but I actually like Miley Cyrus. Coming from a giant Britney Spears fan and a lover of pop music, that should be no real surprise. Her new song is fun and catchy and her video is creepy and pretty at the same time. It’s definitely on my summer mix.

Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed

If there is a question about my intentions I'll tell ya
I'm not here to sell ya
Or tell you to go to hell
I’m not a brat like that

Wasting my day away today... Haiz gonna miss my kor, trex, pekpek and weilin after they go for AB camp tmr till friday. =/ Supposed to go out tmr but i have no idea where yet. Watched Cinderella Story for the uncountable times in the morning and still thinks its a good show.
When we first met i had no idea how important you would be. I dint see you coming at all. Nobody knows what the future holds for us and although its agonizing i guess thats the beauty of it all, the reward at the end. Through constant aniticipation and guessing. And through all these i want you to know that i trust you and for you to trust me. No matter how long i make you wait, just trust me. =) So PUNDEH: Don't think. Don't ponder. Don't wonder. Just follow your heart. Even though we just sit there, not talking. I am happy. =P

For a little laugh.

NYC Sneaker Love - Part 2 of 3

While I was in NYC, I stopped in at the world’s largest Foot Locker: Times Square. I'd never planned on copping any Lebrons but when I walked through the doors, headed down the wall on the right and saw the Nike Air Max LeBron VII Think Pink in the Black and Pink Fire colourway, I was sold! Only available in GS size...how stoked am I to fit into a 6?? In contrast with black, the pink looks hot and not as girly as say, baby pink. I went through a period of being a majah pink-sneaker-hater but have come around to it lately.

Shout-outs to Mike who helped me out! I met a few more staff and they were all mad nice and helpful.

I even got my 90’s throwback game up and picked up a pair of purple slouch socks. I haven’t seen them in the Toronto Foot Lockers yet. As much as I love New York, it’s a good thing I don’t live there. I’d be dead broke. Buuuuuut....my kicks game would be vicious!

If you're feelin these and don't have em by now, stop by Foot Locker Times Square and get yours for 100 bills. Ask for Mike!

My Pal, Pou

Sometimes it's fun to base a cartoon character off a person you know. This is Jose Pou - a fellow cartoonist and animator who worked with me on APC and other cartoons.Cartooning real people in action is a challenge because they are much more specific in design and personality than most cartoon characters.Jose Pou is a beautiful specimen of specificity. He not only has a very unique design, but he

SAVING WILD PLACES Maya Biosphere Reserve, Guatemala

Wildlife Discovery

©WCS Guatemala

The Maya Biosphere Reserve is a rainforest stronghold for jaguars, pumas, scarlet macaws, and howler monkeys. During the Northern Hemisphere winter, millions of migratory birds also take shelter here. The reserve is situated at the heart of the Selva Maya, a forested area that spans neighboring portions of Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico. It serves as a critical watershed for the surrounding communities and as a major carbon sink for the entire planet. As the epicenter of Maya civilization from 350 B.C. to 150 A.D., the forest’s 200 archeological sites draw tourists from around the world, bringing much needed revenue.

Fast Facts

* The Maya Biosphere Reserve includes three national parks: Tikal, Laguna del Tigre, and Mirador-Río Azul.
* Covering 8,100 square miles, the reserve protects the largest block of broadleaf forest north of the Amazon Basin.

Challenges

Guatemala is recovering from years of internal conflict, and the government has not strongly regulated the use of its natural resources. The reserve provides the country with 90 percent of its petroleum and timber. Roads built to facilitate timber and petroleum extraction allow access to the interior, and bring illegal human settlements, unsustainable land use policies, rampant hunting of wildlife, and annual burning of trees.

WCS Responds

WCS partners with local communities and governments to find innovative approaches to integrate development projects with the protection of natural and cultural resources, particularly sustainable forest management. We are also studying jaguars as part of a broader WCS effort to document and monitor the species’ populations across Mesoamerica. And we are fighting to save the Maya scarlet macaw population from extirpation caused by the pet trade. Our efforts to conserve scarlet macaws include nest protection, artificial nest construction, veterinary monitoring, and education initiatives.

Guatemala makes landmark civil war conviction

Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:56pm EDT
Reuters.com

By Sarah Grainger

CHIMALTENANGO Guatemala, Aug 31 (Reuters) - A former military commissioner became the first person to be convicted of the forced disappearance of people in Guatemala's 36-year civil war on Monday, and was sentenced to 150 years in prison.

A panel of three judges found former military commissioner Felipe Cusanero guilty of the disappearances of six peasant farmers between 1982 and 1984 in a landmark case that overcame Guatemala's notorious bureaucracy and impunity.

Almost a quarter of a million people, mainly poor Mayans, were killed during the 1960-1996 conflict between leftist guerrillas and the government. Around 45,000 of them are thought to have been forcibly made to disappear.

Over 80 percent of the atrocities were committed by the army, according to a United Nations-backed truth commission.

The tiny courtroom in Chimaltenango, a provincial capital about 25 miles (40 km) west of Guatemala City near where Cusanero ordered the disappearances, was packed with Mayan villagers and families of the disappeared as the judges read out their verdict.

"We weren't looking for vengeance, but for the truth and for justice," said Hilarion Lopez, whose son Encarnacion was taken by soldiers in March 1984 when he was just 24 years old and who was never seen again by his family.

Cusanero, now in his mid-60s, was the commissioner in charge of around 40 soldiers in the region in the early 1980s.

Guatemalan rights groups believe he was responsible for the deaths or disappearances of more people, but only the families of six victims came forward to testify against him.

Legal experts say it is the first time anyone has been convicted for forced civil war disappearances in Guatemala.

"This judicial precedent opens the door for the families of the tens of thousands of victims to take their cases to court," said Mario Minera, executive director of the human rights organization CALDH, which has spent four years fighting for disappearance cases.

Few people have ever been tried for the crimes and human rights violations that took place during Guatemala's conflict and the army has refused to allow access to its archives.

Former military dictator Efrain Rios Montt continues to serve as a lawmaker in Guatemala's Congress even as he faces accusations of genocide committed during the civil war.

But the country has started a healing process, exhuming war graves to search for the dead.

Molding police archives were discovered in a warehouse in the Guatemala City four years ago and could provide evidence in hundreds of cases of disappeared people.

Maria Tan, whose husband was made to disappear by Cusanero, said the verdict was a significant step for the country. "My grandchildren are growing up and it's important that they never experience what we went through," she told Reuters. (Writing by Robin Emmott, editing by Anthony Boadle)

Note:

This is why I - and many others - keep working in Guatemala. Many young men who worked for me in the U.S. told me how, when they were young, they had seen their fathers forcibly dragged from their homes. They never saw them again.

I could harldy believe it; it was so sad hearing this tale. Now, I am a witness and can help do something about it. War is a crime, no matter where it occurs.

The Guatemalan Civil War ended after 36 years in 1996. Not very long ago. How do we prevent this from hapening again, on any soil?

Friday Fives

This week's Friday Fives is Five Random Questions, brought to you by:

Just Me and My Life

1. Are you a MAC or a PC?
I’m not sure. I love my iphone, ipod, itunes and I’m pretty sure I would love a Mac, but they are expensive and I have a perfectly good PC right now.

2. If you could go anywhere on vacation this summer where would you go?
The vacation I want to go on all the time is to South Africa. I want to visit some friends we have in Johannesburg and Cape Town and then go on an African Safari. I’ve been wanting to do that for the last eight years. Now if I could only convince my husband to get all those shots…

We do have a vacation to Los Angeles planned. We’ll be seeing Rent at the Hollywood bowl, hitting Universal Studios and relaxing on the beach, kid-free!

3. Which is your most cherished childhood memory?
I cherish the memories of the summer at our property on a little lake spending time with extended family and especially my grandma. She was out there every weekend in the summer and we were invited every time.

This was taken about three years ago. We're nerds.

4. What were you doing the last time that you had a good laugh?
Taking this video. "Nuths!"

5. What is your favorite book or magazine? (We need some beach read ideas)
My favorite magazine of all time is Us Weekly. I’ve been a subscriber for seven years. It never gets old. For a good beach read, I think any of the Chelsea Handler books are a great choice. Her chapters are just different hilarious stories so it’s easy to pick up and put down whenever you want.
