South African Prison Gang Photography

London based photographer, Araminta de Clemont, took these fascinating portraits of people after they were released from from South African prisons and allowed to return to society. While imprisoned they formed gangs and, as part of that culture, they had large areas of their bodies tattooed. The practice is forbidden in prisons but they managed it by mixing rubber or bricks with saliva to form a pigment which is then applied with knives or sewing needles.
