101 CURATORS. THE FLASH ART LIST.
Here is the list of the 101 Curators most highly regarded by artists from Flash Art's March-April 2010 issue, answered by 100 artists. As they say in spanish 'Ni son todos los que estan, ni estan todos los que son'. I'm happy (or surprised) to be in number 77, just under Polly Staple who's work I really respect. There's also Jens Hoffmann in number 6, Raimundas Malasauskas in 37, Francesco Manacorda in 63, Stefan Kalmar in 81 and Mathieu Copeland in 87, all colleagues with whom I've enjoyed collaborating. Many in the list are overrated, and many underrated. From London, Jessica Morgan and Stuart Comer from Tate and Mark Sladen ex ICA are missing, as well as Emily Pethick from Showroom and Kit Hammonds. There's only 3 curators from Latin America, Carlos Basualdo in 34, Ivo Mesquita in 92 and myself (unless you consider Jens Hoffmann who is half Costa Rican). Totally missing are Adriano Pedrosa, Lisette Lagnado, Julieta Gonzalez, Helmut Batista, Rodrigo Moura, Magali Arriola and Sofia Hernadez Chung. From Spain there's only Chus Martinez at 23, with Nuria Enguita, Octavio Zaya and Agustin Perez Rubio among others missing from the list. Also missing are Marina Fokidis, XYZ (Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Poka-Yio and Augustine Zenakos) curators/directors of the Athens Biennal as well as Locus Athens (Maria-Thalia Carras and Sophia Tournikiotis). Flash Art says they were attentive to emerging scenes like Colombia, but there's no Colombian curators in the list! Maria Ines Rodriguez and Jose Roca obviously missing. About 40 of the curators are female (with Beatrix Ruf in no. 5, Catherine David in no. 30 and Ute Meta Bauer in no. 49), and there are three curator collectives (Latitudes, WHW, and FormContent). There's 36 curators on the list of which I'm not aware of their practice, which means nothing because I'm sure there are many more which are not aware of mine! I'm sure there's many other missing which I can't remember now, but deserve their place in the list. As Flash Art says, this list must be taken in a spirit of playfulness, still, it's much more democratic and international than if it had been done by Art Forum or Frieze!
