No, I'm not talking about potatoes that are spoiled, although I have some experience with those, too! The hairy potatoes I'm referring to is a science lesson that is perfect for St. Patrick's Day. You cut a potato in half, draw a face on it, scoop out some of the inside, put cotton balls in the scooped out part of the potato, and sprinkle with rye grass seeds. Keep the cotton balls moist so the rye grass will sprout into "hair". Here's a lesson that includes a note asking parents for supplies, prediction chart, and observation sheet. You can get 10 clear cups at Dollar Tree for $1. Dollar Tree only had flower seeds. They won't sprout as quickly as rye grass. It's better to go to your local nursery or home improvement store to buy rye grass seeds.
