FEDERICO HERRERO: NEW MESOAMERICAN CONCRETISM AT PROYECTOS ULTRAVIOLETA IN GUATEMALA

Press Release:
(mistranslated from spanish with google translate! spanish original version below)

CATARACT
Federico Herrero

In his first solo exhibition in Guatemala, Federico Herrero seeks to distance itself from its renowned line of work to explore a variety of sculptural forms that are specified in the cement. This formal exercise and research is a new possibility in his work that adds to his most famous painting operations.

Federico Herrero (Costa Rica, 1978) is considered one of the most important figures in contemporary Latin American art. His artistic work is influenced by political, cultural tradition and natural fertility of Costa Rica, where he lives and works. Smith transfers the colors and shapes of dense landscape around his native city, San Jose, different supports such as walls and canvases. At the same time, there is intense interaction between geometric and organic forms in the spaces between figuration and abstraction. A Federico Herrero particularly interested in the interface between culture and nature, carefully monitoring the urban environment of Costa Rica that often seems on the verge of being reclaimed by the incessant local flora. This is evident in much of his work in situ, where the stairs or the corner of a room can be "claimed" by the various organic forms of his work. It blends the tradition of mural painting with different regional sources of inspiration including traffic signage, tropical plants, colorful houses in rural areas and suburbs, graffiti, old signs and other media and advertising . All this is based on an unusual mix of traditional and folk elements with sophisticated and abstract forms.

In 2001 Smith received a Golden Lion for best young artist of the Venice Biennale. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in museums around the world, including venues in Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain. The work is part of multiple collections worldwide, including Mudam Luxembourg, the Museum Santander in Spain, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Japan.

CATARATA
Federico Herrero

a Project by FEDERICO HERRERO

Galeria Luisa Strina

August, 10th to September, 10th, 2011.

Federico Herrero exhibits a series of never seen before(!) paintings, produced between Costa Rica and São Paulo. The title of the exhibition refers to the energy (of shapes and colors) and to the field of action of painting. Making use of the abstraction as platform and the canvas as space, the artist deconstructs a landscape where the resonance of the shapes leads us to a contemplative assimilation of his work. Some of these paintings carry scraps of paint from former works, patches left on the floor of his studio that act as diaries of his production and speak about the craft of painting. This resonance process occurs as well when some of the paintings, produced under control, try to limit the language and the choreography of the forms created by their residues, which precisely represent an open structure due to their random configuration.

"Over the last decade, the Costa Rican artist Federico Herrero has emerged as one of the most important figures in the field of visual art in Central America. Typically working in the medium of painting, his artistic practice is hugely influenced by the politics, cultural traditions, and natural splendor of his home country. Herrero translates the mix of colors, shapes, and forms of the streets of San José and the abundant tropical landscape that surround the city, onto gallery walls or canvases. His works are best described as a brisk and intense play between geometric and organic forms, from which he creates nonrepresentational narratives that are caught in the gap between figuration and abstraction."

Jens Hoffmann, text to the Passengers show, 2008. Wattis, San Francisco.
